Calgary homeowners have two options when it comes to heating their water; they can choose either a traditional tank water heater or the tankless version, otherwise known as an on-demand water heater. Over the years, on-demand water heaters have become increasingly popular, and at Accurate Home Inspections, we can understand why. In fact, our very own Terra Snyder made a recent appearance on Homes & Lifestyles to discuss the matter, and to highlight some advantages of switching to an on-demand water heater.
In order to determine the best solution for your home and family, check out some of the most notable pros to owning an on-demand water heater:
On-demand water heaters deliver endless supply of hot water
While a traditional tank water heater takes time to fill up and slowly heat the water inside of it, on-demand water heaters only heat water as needed through a gas burner or electricity supply. This allows for a steady flow of hot water any time you need it, for as long as you need it.
Energy efficiency = financial savings
Storing liters upon liters of hot water in a large tank and maintaining that heat until it’s ready to be used can consume a lot of household energy. By taking advantage of an on-demand water heater’s ability to provide hot water without the use of a tank, you eliminate the energy cost associated with that storage and consistent supply of heat.
On-demand water heaters last longer
In addition to your energy savings, switching to an on-demand water heater allows you to get more life out of your system before a replacement is needed. While you can generally get a good 10-15 years out of a traditional tank water heater, depending on the model, an on-demand water heater typically lasts for 20+ years. So while one of the few disadvantages to making the switch may be that you’ll have to pay a little more out of pocket to go tankless, the overall savings may just be worth it.
Regardless of whether you choose to a traditional tank water heater or an on-demand water heater, it is imperative that you have your system inspected by a professional home inspector over time. Remember that this is not something that is only necessary when buying or selling a home. If you have a system that is upwards of 10 years old, we recommend that you have a Calgary home inspector come out annually to ensure everything is still in proper working condition.
